<abstract language="eng">In 2006, the Georgian Encyclopedia turned 40 years old. The national encyclopedias are like  passports of nations, a marker of cultural level. They are collections of a wide range of knowledge represented in national languages. National encyclopedias are especially needed during the period of historical and social transformations of countries. That is why the first Georgian Soviet encyclopedia in twelve volumes (1967-87) was of great importance. This article offers an overview of the Georgian Encyclopedia.</abstract>
