Foreword by the Editor-in-Chief to the 12th volume of the Encyclopedia Herald of Ukraine is proposed.
The Encyclopedia Herald of Ukraine is an open-access, academic journal published by the Institute of Encyclopedic Research, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. The Journal publishes original scholarly articles, communications, reports, reviews, biography essays that have a special focus on study of encyclopedias within contexts of history, culture, information, publishing, technology, etc.
The Journal was founded as a platform for discussing the issues of building the Encyclopedia of Modern Ukraine. But today, it serves as an international forum for presenting research that contributes theoretical or practical value to the encyclopedic field. A primary mission of the Journal is to encourage academic approaches in encyclopedic practice, fostering the active and effective application of reliable knowledge for social advancement in Ukraine and worldwide.
The Journal is published annually in December and currently welcomes submissions for its 16th volume.

The article is devoted to the created in 1941 German-language cartographic work on Ukraine (“Handschrift-Karten zur Geschichte, Volkstumskunde und Wirtschaft der Ukraine”), known as the Historical Atlas of Ukraine. It is believed that its author is a famous geographer, encyclopedist Volodymyr Kubiiovych. However, there is reason to assume that V. Kubiiovych has nothing to do with the compilation of this atlas, as he does not cite this work in his bibliography. In this study, we suggest that the Historical Atlas of Ukraine was created not for scientific and educational purposes, but because of political inquiries. Probably, V. Kubiyovych was involved in its preparation in connection with the socio-political conditions in which the scholar found himself.

The article offers an overview of the life of anthropologist Ivan Rakovsky who is an editor-in-chief of the Ukrainian General Encyclopedia (1930–1935), the first Ukrainian universal encyclopedic publication. The biographical information of the scientist is described through the vision of his formation as an encyclopediographer. The appearance and compiling the UGE, as well as Rakovsky’s activities in the Shevchenko Scientific Society are highlighted.

This article discusses the characteristics of various reference digital resources of the modern humanities. We have identified three main digital resources: a digital library resource, a multimedia digital system, and a multimedia encyclopedic database. These important resources are involved in creating a modern information society. In this context, the Ukrainian Literary Encyclopedia of the Shevchenko Institute of Literature of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and the creation of an independent multimedia encyclopedic database are considered.

Today, humans have the phase of the social organization evolution, in which information, communication technologies, and knowledge are fundamental objects of production, as well as the digital environment is an important space for the development of society. There are problems of people’s digital literacy actualized by the increasing role of the existing and growing in information and knowledge in society from Internet environment. This study illustrates the issue of getting digital literacy using online encyclopedic resources on the case about informing the pandemic of coronavirus disease COVID-19 worldwide in 2019-2020. Based on analysis of the mentioned virological topic articles of the national encyclopedias of Europe (Britannica, Brockhaus, Encyclopedia of Modern Ukraine, Great Norwegian Encyclopedia, Wikipedia, etc.) the conclusion is made that encyclopedic knowledge is inert and during the pandemic, it has a low practical role for the needs of humans in the context of safe behav

The Encyclopedia about Nosivka raion is an object of the article. This regional encyclopedia was founded in 2019. It is an open-ended online encyclopedia built on the model of Wikipedia. The similarities with Wikipedia, features of the structure and content of encyclopedia articles, as well as authors and those who contribute to the encyclopedia textual corpus are highlighted.

The article presents the experience of the Encyclopedia of Kolomyia’s compiling. The specialties of the structure this multivolume encyclopedic work as well as the editorial and publishing process are characterized. The historical preconditions of the appearance of this encyclopedia about Kolomyia region are described, the important information of this region and the necessity of their coverage in the encyclopedic format are highlighted.

The article reviews the Ukrainian Encyclopedia of Religious Studies that will be published soon. The encyclopedic work was prepared by the academic team 20 years ago. The history of the encyclopedia case, its features, and achievements in religious studies, as well as problems and prospects of its publishing are covered.
«Енциклопедичний вісник України» — рецензований щорічник Інституту енциклопедичних досліджень НАН України. Журнал публікує оригінальні дослідження, повідомлення, доповіді, огляди, біографічні нариси з енциклопедистики (історичний, культурологічний, науково-інформаційний, методико-видавничий, інноваційно-технологічний та ін. контексти).
Видання виникло як вісник для інформування й обговорення питань підготовки «Енциклопедії Сучасної України». Проте сьогодні його мета — слугувати міжнародним майданчиком для представлення досліджень, що мають теоретичну чи практичну цінність для енциклопедичної галузі, та сприяти застосуванню наукового підходу до підготовки сучасних енциклопедичних видань. Це розглядаємо як запоруку поширення достовірних енциклопедичних знань, необхідних для суспільного розвитку України й інших країн світу.
Друкується раз на рік (грудень). Нині редакція приймає авторські рукописи для 16-го випуску.

Дослідження присвячено німецькомовній картографічній праці про Україну 1941 року (“Handschrift-Karten zur Geschichte, Volkstumskunde und Wirtschaft der Ukraine”), відомій як “Історичний атлас України”. Існує думка, що її автор – український географ, енциклопедист В. Кубійович. З іншого боку, є підґрунтя припускати, що В. Кубійович не укладав цей атлас, передусім із тієї обставини, що у своїй бібліографії не згадує відповідного твору. Наш аналіз дає підстави вважати, що “Історичний атлас України” створено не з науково-освітньою метою, а через політичні потреби. Імовірно, В. Кубійович був долучений до його підготовки у зв’язку з соціально-політичними умовами, в яких він опинився.

У статті запропоновано огляд життєвого шляху антрополога Івана Раковського – головного редактора першої української універсальної енциклопедії – “Української загальної енциклопедії” (1930–1935). Описано біографічні відомості науковця крізь призму становлення його як енциклопедиста, створення УЗЕ, її підготовки та діяльності в Науковому товаристві імені Шевченка.

У статті схарактеризовано різні типи цифрових довідникових ресурсів, що ними послуговується сучасна гуманітаристика, зокрема літературознавство. Виділено три основні з них, зокрема електронну ресурс-бібліотеку, мультимедійну електронну систему й мультимедійну енциклопедичну базу. З’ясовано важливість довідникових електронних ресурсів у процесах формування сучасного інформаційного суспільства. Окрему увагу звернено на проект видання “Української літературної енциклопедії” Інституту літератури імені Т. Г. Шевченка НАН України та необхідність створення окремої мультимедійної енциклопедичної бази літературної енциклопедії України.

Нині світ перебуває на тій стадії еволюційного розвитку цивілізації, у якій інформація та знання стають основоположними продуктами виробництва. Збільшення ролі інформації й знань в житті суспільства, які поширюються в інтернет-просторі, актуалізує проблеми цифрової освіченості (грамотності / компетенції) людей. У цьому дослідженні на окремому прикладі, пов’язаному з пандемією коронавірусної інфекції в період 2019–2020 років, показано значення онлайн-енциклопедій у процесі формування цифрової освіченості. Проаналізувавши статті на тему COVID-19, SARS-CoV-2, які подають національні енциклопедії Європи (й України зокрема), зроблено висновок про інертність енциклопедичних знань і невисоку їх практичну цінність для переважної більшості населення з точки зору поведінки й рішень під час пандемії. У цьому контексті вирізняється “Вікіпедія”, пропонуючи значно більший масив довідкових даних, зокрема й тих, що зазвичай не властиві класичним енциклопедіям, однак корисні для читачів.
